Cuban vs. Nicaraguan: A Tale of Two Tobaccos

For generations 'Cuban' was shorthand for the finest cigar on earth, prized for an elegant, grassy, almost honeyed smoke born of Cuba's unique soil. That reputation is real — but it is no longer the whole story.

Nicaragua has risen to rival it, with volcanic earth producing tobacco that is richer, spicier, and often bolder, full of pepper, cocoa, and dark sweetness. Many of today's most celebrated cigars are Nicaraguan, and blenders increasingly mix leaves from several countries to build complexity.

Which is better is the wrong question; it's a matter of mood. Reach for a classic Cuban profile when you want refinement and restraint, and a Nicaraguan when you want power and depth. The fun, of course, is in tasting both.
